April Newsletter

Since there is no "real" meeting in April, this will be a bit longer than usual. So grab a cup of coffee or tea and put your feet up!

"OSWEGO COUNTY GARDEN CLUB GATHERING"
WHEN: Saturday, APRIL 10th 10:00am-1:00pm
WHERE: Pulaski Wesleyan Church

This is a brunch for the four garden clubs in Oswego County to meet and exchange ideas. Our speaker will be Tom Basciani, who has a passion for bees! If you plan to attend and would like to bring a dish, please call Linda Cough (298-6947). She has planned a delicious brunch menu and would love to pass on a recipe.

March Meeting Recap

Our March business meeting was a success and very well attended. A big thanks goes to the club's executive board for those yummy refreshments.

A big welcome goes out to our 8 new members!!! They are Jess & Steve Bellinger, Jody Dobbin, Margaret Hall, Becky Kennedy, Sue Kramak, Sharon Lawrence, and Judy Swancott.

A vote was taken and accepted to use half of the Plant Sale money for the two community service projects our club will be doing this year. Money for charitable organizations (Friendship Shop, Lions Club, etc.) is a donation that comes from the club's general fund, and will be selected and voted on in the Fall.

MAY 1ST , SATURDAY "GREEN JEANS DAY"

Green Jeans Day is one of our community service projects. We will be sprucing up the existing garden at the Sandy Creek Library and as a thank you for letting us use the facilities at no charge, we will also spruce up around the church. We will meet at 9:00am with our tools in hand. PLEASE call Marilyn Gray at 298-7962 if you can help out in Sandy Creek and Nancy Dailey at 298-4336 if you can help out at the church. Knowing how many volunteers will help us determine what projects we can tackle. We will all meet at church at noon for a brown bag lunch (drinks provided by the club) with our plant exchange to follow. If you know that you cannot come to the Plant Sale on May 15th, you can bring your plants and extra pots this Saturday.

MAY 15th PLANT SALE

Saturday, May 15th is the day of our plant sale, and it is the day for the all-town garage sales. The village changed the date, it is not Mother's Day week-end this year. There will be a sign-up sheet at the April 10th brunch to work at one of the two shifts. The first shift will set-up and work from 9:00am-12:00pm, and the second shift will work and clean-up from 12:00pm-3:00pm.

PLEASE...Dig the plants up early and pot them so they look nice & healthy.
PLEASE...Lable them with their name and growing condition (sun/shade). If
your not sure, just bring it and someone will know.

Dues

Dues are due!!! $10.00 a year to join a club that promotes the love of gardening through educational programs, shared knowledge, and friendship is a real bargain!

Beginning Gardening Class Series

Don’t be afraid to try gardening. There are just a few simple things you need to know to get started. And the more you learn – even by trial and error – the better gardener you can become. The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oswego County Master Gardeners are offering a “Beginning Gardening Class Series” to get you started as well as answer questions you may have.

1. Tuesday, March 23rd from 6 to 8 pm at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Office, 3288 Main St., Mexico, NY. Vicki Mather, Oswego County Master Gardener will instruct a “Vegetable Gardening Class for the Beginner”. This class is also a good refresher for every gardener. Topics to be covered include garden location, water, soil, site selection, fertilizer, container gardening, mulching, managing weeds, companion planting, etc.

2. Tuesday, March 30th from 6 to 8 pm at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Office, 3288 Main St., Mexico, NY. Jan Smith and Linda Restuccio, Oswego County Master Gardeners will demonstrate “Seed Starting Basics”. This will be a hands-on demonstration and participants will take home vegetable seeds for planting. Topics to be covered include garden layouts, tips on transplanting, seed saving, etc.

3. Monday, April 12th from 6 to 8 pm at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Office, 3288 Main St., Mexico, NY. Renee Ames, Oswego County Master Gardener will discuss “Herb Gardening and Attracting Bees to Your Garden”. There has been a valid concern regarding the shortage of honeybees. You will learn what you can do to assure there is a balance for the future of gardening. Renee will explore easy to grow herbs and flowers that both supply honeybees with nectar for a strong hive and in-turn provide gardeners with a productive, beautiful garden. Without pollination by honeybees, as much as two-thirds of edible plants would disappear.

Save money and attend all three classes for only $20. Or, attend individual classes of your choice for $10 each. Cost includes handouts and hands-on seed starting. Pre-registration is required by contacting Karen at 315-963-7286, ext. 201. Please let us know if you have special needs.

March Newsletter

It's that time of year..."GARDENING FRIENDS" getting together. And our first meeting will be March 17th, 7:00 P.M. at the Pulaski Wesleyan Church (March 24th is the snow date, same time & place).

The business meeting will kick off what certainly will be an exciting and interesting year. We'll go over the month by month events for the year, hear from our officers, as well as the committees. And of course, there will be time for refreshments and a chance to get caught up with members we haven't seen for awhile.

Some members asked about having a seed exchange and this will sure be a great time to do that. It will get us all thinking about starting seeds for the Spring. If you have any seeds you would like to share...bring them to the meeting!

Dues are still $10 and Herta will be collecting them again this year. The sooner we pay...the sooner we get an accurate membership list with names, addresses and phone numbers!!

SAVE THIS DATE: Sat. April 10th, 10 AM-1 PM
Our garden club will be hosting a brunch for the Oswego County garden clubs. You won't want to miss it!!
